Know who the Weldon camp fears? The eagle scout.

The Daily Times ran a pretty detailed story by Cindy Scharr about Weldon's staffers calling the police on a young Sestak supporter who had come to a public Weldon press conference. Unfortunately, delcotimes.com didn't run the story in the online edition, but you can find the PDF version here.

Some choice quotes for the download-averse:
A campaign staffer for U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon, R-7, of Thornbury, called police Friday to report protesters outside of the Republican congressman's campaign office.

When the responding officer arrived, he found 18-year-old Ross Doppelt standing there. Alone.

Doppelt, a lifelong Haverford resident and campaign volunteer for Weldon's opponent, Democrat Joe Sestak, said he had shown up for what was publicized as an endorsement announcement.

"I just wanted to hear what they had to say," said the Eagle Scout and National Merit Commended Scholar....
Unlike the Weldon staff, the officer understood the law:
Protesting is not against the law, police told Doppelt. The responding officer reminded him that as long as protesters were peaceful and not obstructing passersby, they were within their rights to be there.

But there were no protestors. Just Doppelt.
Even Weldon's usually cranky campaign chair Mike Puppio seems to know it was an inappropriate reaction:
Puppio said there was concern that someone was going to block the entrance to the chopping center.

"That wasn't the case," Puppio admitted. "The only one there was the young man in the blue shirt."
Do keep in mind that Weldon's team sends noisy protesters to almost every public appearance by Sestak.

Thin-skinned and paranoid. Yep, that's our Curt!

Well, after seeing Ross's picture, I can see why Weldon was so scared. Nothing is more frightening to a 10-term Congressman than an 18 year old kid with glasses.

With those glasses he could read newspapers and learn of all the ways Weldon's votes have hurt this district and the nation as a whole.

What's worse, intelligent 18 year olds sometimes congregate in large groups where they learn and exchange ideas (colleges).

But what is truly frightening is that these well-educated, politically aware young people might actually vote.

Weldon simply cannot tolerate the idea of well-informed people showing up at the polls (neither can any incumbant with his voting record).

Curt, forget the police, send in the military. Oh, I forgot, you sent them all to Iraq.

This "honorable eagle scout" "hurricane katrina volunteer" Ross Dopplett has been coming to a few of the more recent Weldon events. He was also seen lurking around Weldon's HQ after hours, talking to the security guards trying to get information. Bottom line is Weldon asked the guy where he was from and told the guy he does not have to hide....this Honorable Eagle Scout almost wet his pants. I guess after he stopped crying and got himself together, he decided he would cry a little bit more to the NewsPaper....talk about thin skin?

This is ridiculous. I want the Democrats to take back Congress this year but not like this. I've spent my fair share of time around Congressmen, and they don't just come up to you for no reason. Clearly Weldon recognized the kid from other Weldon events which it is alleged he had been hanging around at. Unless he was wearing a huge Sestak shirt, how would Curt be able to recognize some anonymous teenager as an evil associate of the other team? I highly doubt a Congressman would threaten a young kid, and seeing as he does work for the other side the kid probably saw a chance for some 15 minutes while hurting an opponent so he blew what happened out of proportion to the press along with you.
I'm a member of MoveOn.org and I received emails that Curt's going to be a target of their Red Handed campaign protesting at all his events. I guess Weldon's people found out as well and had called the police in case of any trouble, which is a common thing done for events with public officials. To turn around and say Curt frantically dialed 911 because he saw some kid is absurd.
As I said, I wish the Democrats good luck this year and hope they take back the Congress nationally. However, reading these obviously blown out of proportion situations on this blog makes me reconsider if I want the Dems to do it with the help of a Sestak victory.
Let's be rational about things here. If Joe deserves to win he will do it on his own merits. This childish mudslinging which villainizes his opponent trying over nothing to make him look like a child abuser does not reflect well on this blog.

It seems like Weldon is the one wetting his pants. Maybe we should send him a box of Depends. If a Sestak supporter talking to security guards (what kind of wimpy Congressman needs security guards?) is lurking, the the Weldon staffers following Sestak must be stalkers.

Anonymous MoveOn-
My reading of the Delco Times article MoveOn "alert" was that the Weldon camp got word that MoveOn would show up. Rather than wait and see, they pre-emptively called the police and were embarassed when only one kid showed up. However, initial information did make it sound like they called the police for just one kid.

I heard the kid was wearing a blue shirt. I'm wondering if it may have been a Sestak shirt, which would called more attention to himself.

As for Weldon picking him out of a crowd, I'm sure Weldon's staffers pointed the kid out.
