Disagreeing with my fellow PA-7 Watch blogger

I have not posted to this PA-7 Watch blog for a long time, mostly because I haven't taken the time to do so. In not paying attention, I've let a few things go by here that need to be addressed.

DD has posted a few disturbing posts here, taking Joe Sestak to task for his vote on the recent Iraq Ward funding bill, and commenting on the Delco Democratic County
Council candidates. On both of these issues, I completely disagree with DD.

On the Iraq War funding vote, Sestak made his choice and explained why he voted the way he did. This vote was a no-win situation for Sestak. Either way he voted he opened himself to criticism. And the votes were lined up to go the way it went.

Congressman Sestak's top priority is to get the USA out of Iraq. This vote was not going to get us out of Iraq. I believe that Sestak will continue to work towards the goal of getting the USA out of Iraq, and that's why I supported him in the 2006 election and continue to support him now. I'm not a cheerleader, but I do have loyalty and am willing to see things through. I will not I say I support something or someone that I don't believe in. But bashing Sestak on this vote is short-sighted and asinine. And I'm disturbed that DD has done so here.

I'm also disturbed that DD has used this forum to relay his viewpoints on the candidates for County Council candidates. Very simply, this blog is about the PA-7 Congressional elections and candidates. Besides that, I disagree with DD's qualms about the various issues he raised.

We will refocus our blog on our main topic (PA-7) and continue to discuss the pertinent topics as they arise. And it's obvious that we don't always agree! That's simply the way it is in politics I guess.

Seventh Watch-

This blog is yours, I am your guest, and I respect that you can set the agenda. I hadn't realized that you weren't following the blog closely, so I didn't realize I had gotten off your intended course. I had considered the blog to be not only about Joe directly, but also about relevant issues in PA-7 that might be important to voters and/or generate some debate.

As for my recent posts, I felt (and still feel) that we need to hold our candidates and elected officials to account for their promises. During my battles with the anonymous Weldon zombies, it was frequently (and incorrectly) suggested that I would not hold Sestak to account for his promises. Silence on my part after this Iraq Funding vote would have hypocritical.

Considering the news and attention on Joe's vote, I felt it an appropriate topic for this blog. Though taking a position against Joe was atypical, I felt the topic deserved an airing and debate. The views I expressed on the vote mirrored the criticisms both local and nationwide about how Democrats in Congress handled this.

My first post on this was actually BEFORE the vote, begging Sestak to vote against the bill. Afterwards, I considered the Iraq vote to be a complete betrayal of a core campaign promise and I found Joe's explanation far from adequate.

I defended Sestak vigorously during the entire CAIR situation against a onslaught of anti-Joe and anti-muslim rhetoric, both here and on the Delco Times blog.

Ironically, for his Iraq Funding vote, Joe seems to have earned some praise from the right-wingers and lost enthusiasm (if not support) among his progressive base.

As for the County Council races, I felt that Joe's best chance of winning in 2008 was a solid and diverse team taking back the council in 2007.

Did you ever hear the one about Weldon and Gallagher and the phony company that was supposed to re-train Russian nuclear weapons scientists after 9/11?

Dear 7W-
Thank you for refocusing this blog on the issues at hand.
As many others, I was initially troubled by Joe's vote on the Appropriations bill. He has explained himself repeatedly... and I believe that he would end our involvement in Iraq ASAP if he could do so singlehandedly.
I only hope that those criticizing Joe would spend more time lobbying the Senators that have the power to break the veto stranglehold before us.
